5 Steps for Keeping New Year’s Resolutions and Gaining Clarity

Most Common Mistake? Skipping Straight to Step #4

The year 2021 is arguably the most anticipated year in history. A time for redemption, renewal and new beginnings. With every new year comes a sense of realignment, including resolutions. What is a resolution? According to the English dictionary, a resolution is a firm decision to do or not to do something. With 2020 coming to a close, we can assume there is a laundry list of things on your proverbial ‘to do’ and ‘not to do’ lists.

Studies show that New Year’s Resolutions across the board only have a 20% success rate. But why? Improper planning? Unattainable expectations? Lack of clarity?

Owner of Primal Nosh, Dianne Hatke has spent the last few years of her life building resolutions for herself 365 days a year and she has chosen to share some insights with you to help set, stick to and attain the resolutions your better self is counting on.

To begin, identify why your resolutions are so important to you in the first place. Below are 5 steps to help you gain clarity and stand firm in your mission to crush 2021 and make it the best redemption year, ever. These steps are a summary of information you can find in Dianne’s FREE 2021 Clarity Workbook. Download Here

1. Identify Your Core Values

What are the values that you want to solidify or emulate for life. These values are personal and should be meaningful to you, so be honest with yourself. Do you want to be more bold, more unique, more flexible or abundant? Don’t shy away from things you feel are, “selfish,” or out of your comfort zone- that’s what self improvement is all about! In the Clarity Workbook provided, page 3 lists over 100 value words for inspiration. Your first step is to circle 15-20 that you feel are the most important to you.

2. Sort & Group Core Values

After choosing 15-20 values that resonate with you, group related values (ideally in groups of 3-5) and label each with a core value that encompasses all. You’ll find that your values are more closely related than you might think. Some values might even be repeated in different categories. This is an important step to the process of defining your “Why.”

3. Defining Your “Why”

Explain to yourself in clear terms why those values are important to you. What makes this value meaningful and what does that say about you as a person? Writing these meanings down can really help your process and path to clarity, so try and fill in the blanks.

4. Value-Based Changes = Resolutions

Here’s the moment you’ve been waiting for: Tying in the resolutions. The biggest mistake when it comes to Resolutions? Attempting this step, while skipping the other 4!

Now that you have a clear picture of what’s important and why, let’s figure out what is making you feel more connected to those values and what isn’t. Is health one of your values? Maybe time spent in nature is helping and eating fast food isn’t. That means two possible changes that align with your values could be spending more time outdoors or eating less fast food. These value-based changes can now become resolutions.

5. Committing to Those Changes

One of the scariest words in the English dictionary: COMMITMENT. Even if it’s only 10 minutes a day for a few days out of the week, focus on gaining clarity. Use the remaining pages of our Clarity Worksheet for some helpful exercises.

Remember, committing to changes, doesn’t mean following every resolution perfectly every day of the year. It just means to keep your goals in mind and continue to take steps towards them!
