Quick Downlow on Grounding

Grounding: What it is, how to, when to, and when not to.

WHAT IT IS

Grounding, also known as earthing, is the process of putting the body in direct contact with the earth in order to connect electrically with it. The earth carries a mild negative charge and over time our bodies build up a positive charge. The idea is that by connecting with the earth, we can return our bodies to a neutral state. Doing this is believed to help a number of health issues including improving sleep, increasing energy, decreasing inflammation, improving immune function, improving digestion, reducing stress, anxiety, and irritability, improving healing, supporting adrenal health, reducing jet lag, and improving circulation.

HOW TO

There are a few different ways you can ground yourself. The easiest - and cheapest - is to go outside and place your bare hands or feet on grass, earth, or a conductive surface touching the earth, you can also ground by swimming in a lake or ocean. I recommend one of these options.

You can ground indoors by driving a metal rod into the ground, connecting a metal wire to it, then holding onto the wire inside OR by purchasing things such as earthing sheets or mats (see when not to below).

WHEN TO

You can ground anytime! Recommendations for grounding range from 20 minutes per day to 6-8 hours (or longer) per day. These days if I can get 20 minutes I'm happy! Take a TV break and read a book outside with your bare feet on the grass, do some barefoot outdoor yoga, play with your kids in the backyard barefoot, walk barefoot around the park.

WHEN NOT TO

In some cases, you may be over a large ground current, this is most likely in large cities where electrical wires are underground, you don't want to ground over these areas. If using a grounding mat, sheet, or any other grounding device that requires being plugged in, you want to make sure it is plugged into a grounded outlet (one with a third hole, be sure to test that it is grounded first. Trying to ground over a large ground current or plugging in to an outlet that isn't grounded can potentially do more harm than good. For more information on this, click HERE.

DOES IT REALLY WORK?

Some think its bogus but there are a few studies showing promising results from grounding (see below). Either way, there's is nothing wrong with spending a little more time outdoors!
