Keeping Phones Out of the Bedroom

Whew - this past month has been crazy! We've been slacking on the blogging but making some awesome gains everywhere else. We've moved kitchens, we now will have some extra space to grow until we finally get a place to call our own. A new (and our first!) delivery manager has been hired and is in training. We've rolled out with awesome new software that allows delivery tracking and text message notifications. AANNNDD we've been busier than we have ever been! As absolutely exciting as all of this has been, it's also been just a tad stressful - okay maybe a lot stressful. Around the time all of this started happening, I started having trouble sleeping, serious trouble sleeping. I usually don't have issues sleeping. Sleep is my thing. 7-8 hours a night is a MUST for me! Even in my younger days I never skimped on sleep so this was a problem. What did I do to help this problem? One, I started taking Doc Parsleys Sleep Remedy, if you haven't heard of it, it's awesome! It is all natural, it doesn't leave you feeling groggy, and you can still wake up to your child screaming for food at 4 o'clock in the morning. It's a little pricey but if you are like me and prefer to avoid OTCs and prescription meds, this is a great solution for sleep troubles. The other thing I began doing was leaving my cell phone out of the bedroom. This is the topic I really wanted to get to.

On my days off when my 8-month-old wakes up for his 4-5 o'clock feeding and doesn't want to go back to sleep, I usually bring him to bed with me where he will settle back down for another hour or two, usually up for good by 6:30. I've had a bad habit on these days of not wanting to get out of bed at 6:30 so I will turn on the hall light and let Wyatt play in our room while I scroll through Facebook, Instagram or the Skimm. I know, I know, but I also know that I'm not the only one out there doing this. How many of you wake up and immediately check your phone for whatever reason? I really wanted to break this habit. For one, I don't want my child growing up watching me stuffing my face in my phone constantly. I also know that hopping onto social media or checking e-mails is not the best way to start my day. It's not a good way to start the day at all. It's also not a good way to end the day. Sleep experts recommend keeping phones away from the nightstand and it is suggested we turn off all electronic devices 30 minutes to 1 hour before bed (sorry in-bed-TV-watchers!). Using screens before bedtime can disturb our natural sleep cycles and make it harder for us to fall and stay asleep.

Soo.. I started leaving my cell phone out of the bedroom. It has been wonderful! On days when I have to wake up I will leave it in our master bathroom with the alarm set (you can also purchase a regular old alarm clock). This also forces me to get out of bed when I need to instead of slapping the snooze button. I've found that I've been spending a lot less time on social media or doing useless browsing on the internet, something I've been trying to work on. I also don't let myself check e-mails or social media before bed. Nothing is that important that it can't wait until morning and my sleep has been better for it!
