Take Time for Yourself

The past few months have been crazy busy and stressful to say the least! Some days/weeks feel like a blur and at times it feels like the stressful season is never going to end! Now I know I’m not the only mom/wife that is going through a stressful time and I’m sure there are so many of you that have WAY more going on than I do. I can’t imagine how the moms and dads of 3 or more kids do it…major props to yall!

 

As I’m sure most of you know, being overly stressed out on a day to day basis, is NOT a good thing! But in today’s world, it’s a hard thing to avoid! Between running kids around to all their activities, cooking, cleaning, doing laundry, paying bills, going to work, and everything else that is demanded of us on a daily basis, it can be really hard to not get run down. Eventually you feel like you are running on empty!

 

When I start to feel like I’m running on empty or losing myself in all the craziness that is going on around me, I try to take a step back and (attempt) to slow things down! I know I get so caught up in taking care of everyone and everything around me that I forget to take care of myself! But how in the world am I expected to take care of everything and everyone else if I don’t take care of myself?... Good question! I have come up with a list of some of my favorite things to do that help me release some stress and fill my “tank” back up!

 

  1. Epson salt baths…need I say more?! Literally the best thing for a stressed out mama! The magnesium in Epsom salt helps relieve stress and improves relaxation. Light some candles, dim the lights, maybe have a small glass of red wine, and let the relaxation begin! Just make sure the kids are in bed first!
  2. Go for a run! When I’m super stressed or need to burn off some steam, I love to put my head phones on, turn the music up, and run! The exercise alone increases your endorphins, which is a “happy chemical” that your body releases during moderate exercise. Although, running may not be for everyone, and that’s okay! But find some type of exercise to get your oxygen levels up and increase those endorphins! Whether it’s going for a walk, doing yoga, or going for a bike ride.
  3. Get a sitter!! When worst goes to worse, get a sitter and get out! My favorite thing...getting my nails done. Sometimes it worth it to get a sitter for a few hours and go run your errands by yourself, get lunch with a friend, or pamper yourself! It’s easy to lose your sanity when you have two kids hanging on to you while going walking through wal-mart!
  4. And, finally, when it’s been a REALLY stressful day I try to put the kids to bed 30 minutes early. Having an extra 30 minutes at night to myself is so rewarding. Even though I usually end up still cleaning or picking up toys after they go to bed, it’s nice having the house quiet while I do it.

 

Everyone goes through stress at different times and there are so many different factors that can cause it. Sometimes we don’t even realize we are over stressed until we are having a mental breakdown in our kitchen at 3 in the afternoon because your husband ate the last brownie, or is that just me??!! My point is, find some things that will help you unwind and destress. Everyone deserves a break every now and then. You have to take care of yourself before you can take care of everything and everyone around you.
